Jamie Mills led Mills Brothers Racing to their first 1-2 feature-race finish last Sunday at Ballarat’s Redline Raceway, with Jamie’s older brother Mathew Mills coming home in second place.

While the Mills brothers battled it out in the final round of the AMCA Nationals Barry Reidy Memorial Series, which doubled as the penultimate round of the Country Cup, it was 26-year-old Jamie Mills who prevailed, taking the win over Mathew Mills.

“To score our first one-two finish as a team is pretty special,” expressed Jamie Mills, after taking the win.

“I have to thank Dad (Wayne Mills), our crew chief, for all of his hard work in getting us here, as well as Ian Welsh, who has also been an incredible asset to the team. We couldn’t have done it without these guys.

“Also a huge thanks to our highly valued and long-time sponsors OPS Gateway and Phil Munday’s Repair Management for all of their support as well as AMCA Nationals and Redline Raceway. We’re really looking forward to returning to this great track later this month.”

It was Mathew Mills who drew first blood in the sibling rivalry, after qualifying his OPS Gateway/Repair Management-backed Vic # 20 machine in pole position for the feature race earlier in the night. Alongside him on the front row, was fast-paced Grant Cullinger, who qualified in second place. At the drop of the green, the pole-sitter was unable to hold onto his lead, as Cullinger got the jump on him off the line, pulling away as the two brothers began to duke it out for second place.

The pair raced side-by-side for a full five laps, in what was a great display of clean, fast and fierce driving, before the younger Mills eventually made the move stick to steal second place from his older brother. Once clear, Jamie Mills began to hunt down Cullinger and close in on first place, but just as the battle for the lead was heating up, Cullinger suffered a right-rear tyre blowout, ending his race prematurely.

Jamie went on to claim his second feature-race win of the season in his OPS Gateway/Repair Management Vic # 17 hot rod, ahead of 33-year-old Mathew Mills and Bill Lodwick in second and third-place respectively. Lodwick, who started down in position seven for the feature race, put in a great showing to take the final place on the podium.

Earlier in the night, Mathew Mills showed promising form, after seizing a commanding win in the opening heat race. Remaining heat race wins went the way of second-place qualifier Cullinger and Bruce Tait, who qualified fourth for the feature race, alongside Jamie Mills.

The AMCA Nationals will return to Redline Raceway on the Saturday night of April 30, to contest the seventh and final round of the AMCA Country Cup.
